VSClust: Feature-based variance-sensitive clustering of omics data

Abstract:
MOTIVATION:
Data clustering is indispensable for identifying biologically relevant molecular features in large-scale omics experiments with thousands of measurements at multiple conditions. Optimal clustering results yield groups of functionally related features that may include genes, proteins and metabolites in biological processes and molecular networks. Omics experiments typically include replicated measurements of each feature within a given condition to statistically assess feature-specific variation. Current clustering approaches ignore this variation by averaging, which often leads to incorrect cluster assignments.
RESULTS:
We present VSClust that accounts for feature-specific variance. Based on an algorithm derived from fuzzy clustering, VSClust unifies statistical testing with pattern recognition to cluster the data into feature groups that more accurately reflect the underlying molecular and functional behavior. We apply VSClust to artificial and experimental data sets comprising hundreds to more than 80,000 features across 6-20 different conditions including genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics experiments. VSClust avoids arbitrary averaging methods, outperforms standard fuzzy c-means clustering and simplifies the data analysis workflow in large-scale omics studies.

Global solutions for massive Maxwell-Klein-Gordon equations

Abstract:
In this talk, I will introduce a new approach to study the asymptotic dynamics for massive Maxwell-Klein-Gordon equations, which is a coupled system of wave equation with massive Klein-Gordon equation. Due to the different decay mechanism of solutions of wave equation and Klein-Gordon equation, the traditional hyperboloid method can only treat compactly supported initial data. Our new approach in particular fits to the exterior region (outside of forward light cone) and can handle the full case. This is jointed work with S. Klainerman and Q. Wang.

Title:
The global well-posedness on 2D Boussinesq equations with partial fractional dissipation terms

Abstract:
This talk examines the global regularity problem on the two-dimensional (2D) incompressible Boussinesq equations with fractional horizontal dissipation and thermal diffusion. The goal is to establish the global existence and regularity for the Boussinesq equations with minimal dissipation and thermal diffusion. By working with this general 1D fractional Laplacian dissipation, we are no longer constrained to the standard partial dissipation and this study will help understand the issue on how much dissipation is necessary for the global regularity. Due to the nonlocality of these 1D fractional operators, some of the standard energy estimate techniques such as integration by parts no longer apply and new tools including several anisotropic embedding and interpolation inequalities involving fractional derivatives are derived. These tools allow us to obtain very sharp upper bounds for the nonlinearities.

空间对于生物学重要吗? 我们将用种群动力学中的若干偏微分方程模型,来描述物种的扩散、竞争和进化,试图通过一些有趣的数学结果,来说明空间对于种群动力学乃至生物学的影响,同时也试图思考一些新的数学问题, 例如2阶算子的某些特征值问题。
楼元教授简介:
楼元,中国人民大学数学科学研究院院长, 美国俄亥俄州立大学数学教授,国家“千人计划”特聘专家。1988年获得北京大学学士学位,1991年获得北京大学理学硕士学位,1995年毕业于University of Minnesota并获博士学位。1995年-1998年在Berkeley以及University of Chicago从事博士后研究等工作。楼元教授是偏微分方程和生物数学领域的国际著名学者,在《J. Differential Equations》,《SIAM J Math Anal》,《Comm Pure Appl Math》,《J Theoret Biol》等国际顶尖杂志上发表学术论文90余篇并被同行引用多次。他的研究工作获得多项科学基金资助并应邀在多次重要国际会议做大会报告。自2009年起担任《Discrete Cont. Dynamical System-B》主编,并为《SIAM J Appl Math》、《J Differential Equations》等四种国际著名学术期刊编委。
