Dionysus is back

Life is so short , Don’t wait to experience great things.

     Cheers ! To life!

     Dionysus Is Back

“Open the doors of perception, and embrace the flow of life.”

     By Curator Vanessa Zheng

It was in “The Birth of Tragedy” that Friedrich Nietzsche used for the first time the terms “Apollonian” and “Dionysian” in relation to explain the dualistic contradiction of human nature. The principle of “Apollonia****” **** ****bout being pragmatic, rational and orderly; as the opposite “Dionysian” is to praise and embrace the uncertainty of life.

In fact, before these two words were used by Nietzsche, the concepts and philosophies behind “Dionysian” and “Apollonian” had appeared in almost all kinds of cultures and schools of thought, simply called with different names.

In Chinese cultural history, Daoism it’s the essence of “The Happy Excursion”, and the Confucian school of thought is what can be paralleled to the term “Apollonian”; while in the New Age Theory, “Dionysian” represents the higher state of consciousness which goes beyond our “Ego”.

The Dionysian spirit shares many similarities with the WeiJing dynasty’s attitude——Enjoy the wine today, live for today. Very much like the “Absolute Freedom” which C**** Tzu talked about, similarly to the unrestrained bohemian artists, it is represents the holy trinity of Art, Liberty and Beauty.

If we observe the entire history of mankind with a bigger scope, to see the big picture, it resembles a timeline of collective consciousness dominated by “Apollonian” and “Dionysian” in constant change. Typical “Dionysian” eras can be found in times such as the ChunQiu, Weijing, Tang, and Minguo Dynasties of China, The Renaissance Movement of Europe, and the global Hippie movement in the 60s’. They interludes between “Dionysian” and “Apollonian” driven eras are what maintains the dual balance in human nature and its ever ending cycle.

Today, at the end of an Apollonian era, which is dominated by the absolute rationalism of science and technology, the advancements in the quantum physics and artificial intelligence fields has brought us towards an upcoming consciousness transformation. The train of the whole current era will have to deal with a head-on blow of an unprecedented number of uncertainties.

Therefore: “Dionysian is Back”. It is time for a calling to emphasize perception and sensibility. It is the inevitable cyclic nature of history.

The revival of the “Dionysian” spirit awakens our numb senses, frees us from the prison of our brain, drops off all kinds of judgments, erases prejudices; opens the doors of perception, to embrace the unknown, to feel, to experience the flow of life.

The “Dionysian” spirit is all about “experiencing” itself. Live relying on your perceptions and allow all the senses to interweave and interact with each other. All the sensory information will be interpreted by our neural network and outputted into an unspoken feeling. Our brains probably cannot fully understand or speak about it, but our physical body can truly sense it——the fragrance of a summer rose, the sound of stepping on autumn leaves, a drop of brandy cognac landing on your tongue and rendering progressively the burn with a strong aroma.

The word “experience” in Chinese means “to feel by your body”, and in relation to talking about the physical experience——going through it by feeling first hand, touching with the reality of your perception. Just like you have heard thousands of people describing the taste of wine, but it would only get stuck in your imagination. For once, if have you ever tasted it by yourself, the first drop, without words, and then suddenly you will understand.

We could share all kinds of knowledge and information, but “the experience” is something that nobody can replace or share, you have to do it by yourself.

Life is very much like a bottle of brandy, or a box of chocolate ——as the movie "Forrest Gump” says, you will never know how it will taste like, unless you try it.

Life is a journey, where we collect all kinds of experiences along the way, and as we’re going, we’re consuming life, consuming experiences. Everything we gain is like a gift, so just open the box and embrace the surprise of unknown.

Life is short; do not wait to experience great things.

Art is the carrier of all kinds of experiences that are absorbed by sensory languages. Its mission is to cultivate the sensitivity of life, a process of developing a conversation with our inner perceptions.

Trans-media arts brought the freedom of sensory transformation and offer people extra sensory experiences beyond our daily life by interacting with our inner perception. It’s very much like the metaphor of our current age: art becomes more scientific and science and technology become more artistic. Art, science and technology inevitably meet here, just as the destiny of the “Apollonian” and the “Dionysian”.

Sound, light, new media art creates an illusion in the midst of intertwining, as in a dream state ——in the dream, all the stories probably appear very absurd and abstract, but the emotion, the feeling we have perceive is very real.

Today, the concept of consumption has been upgraded; the “Apollonian”-like rational consumption has became a Dionysian-like idea, which we can call “scene experience”. We’re no longer satisfied by spending money on a purely material level, but we would much rather spend money going for experience. An art exhibition is like a journey as well. It invites people come to the scene, an energy field, a fantasyland created by all kinds of sensory languages, to touch the real emotional experience, to feel the vibration of its pulse.

Tmall Fantasy Lab invites 5 outstanding young new media artists: Chen Yu, Shaun Hu, Qiu Yu, Tian Xiaolei and Wu Bo, and they will compose a fantastic perceptional journey for you with their trans-media installations. Audio, visual, touches, olfactory, together with the taste of Hennessy cognac, will make you finally reach your inner perceptions. Started from wine, it’s a story about the revival of “Dionysian” in our era, a symbolic story about life——a collection of all kinds of experiences.

5 artists as story tellers from their own perspective, with the mean of new media arts combining “art” and “technology”, will lead you step by step along the path. A metaphor of the brewing concept of Hennessy ——when technology develops to the extreme, it becomes an art.

All the “Dionysian” ages of our history, are the blooming times of diversity: with various values and lifestyles springing everywhere. When we free our minds, we will wilder our perspective in which we look at the world and embrace the vastness of life locating ourselves on a big map.

And all kinds of experiences, whether our lives or tasting a cup of brandy, are like a journey: the one that returns, will never be the same person as the one who departed: there is something changed, in the perspective in which we see things

This art exhibitio**** **** ****lso like a journey. Thank you for coming here. Before you venture on your journey, here are just some warm tips: let go of all your judgments and thinking, drop off all your expectations and prejudices. Simply experience and feel.

     Cheers! To life!
