报告摘要:
Polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell has been regarded as a potential power source for portable and mobile applications due to its noteworthy features of high efficiency and zero emission. In operation, hydrogen and air are fed into anode and cathode gas channels, respectively, and react with water as the only byproduct. Water product may flood electrodes and fuel cell, reducing voltage output. In this talk, I will present three major areas of work that UCI has original contributions in recent years, including:
1.Spatial variation of the reaction rate in cathodes. Though the cathode catalyst layer is thin less than 10 micro meter, reaction may differ significantly from site to site. UCI introduced a new parameter to quantify the spatial variation of reaction, and proposed a novel multilayer configuration for the cathode catalyst layer.
2. Microchannel two-phase flows. We will introduce our recent work on two-phase flow in thin gas flow channels (0.3 mm thick) and general porous media flow fields. It is found that the flow in thin microchannels is subject to the stratified regime for hydrophilic channels, but falls in the rivulet regime when one side wall changes to hydrophobic. Two-phase flow stability at the channel-manifold interface was studied. Theories regarding flow in porous media flow field will also be covered.
3.Microscale two-phase flow through GDL. In recent, we successfully implemented the VOF study of two-phase flow through GDLs by capturing local porosity and PTFE loading variations. New theory regarding the heterogeneous GDLs will be presented and discussed.
Some recent progress in catalyst development and Toyota Mirai in the literature will be presented as background introduction.
