     We seek a Postdoctoral/visiting scholars Scientist to work on a research project seeking to develop and evaluate new technologies in genome detection for blood donation screening and wider diagnostic detection of viral pathogens.

     The effectiveness of next-generation sequencing (NGS) and the implementation of several strategies to enhance its analytical sensitivity will be evaluated against existing PCR-based assays for defined pathogens, such as HCV, HIV and HBV currently screened in blood and organ donors.

     The project will develop recent advances in nucleic acid binding methodologies coupled to genome amplification, for example using CRISPR cas9/13-coupled guide RNAs. The work is a component of a large research unit programme funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR).

     The appointee will direct and participate in a series of research and development programmes in the Wellcome Genome Centre, University of Oxford, designed to enhance the sensitivity and specificity of NGS methods for defined pathogens and potentially wider metagenomic screening.

     The appointee will be working under the supervision of Dr. Tanya Golubchik, Big Data Institute, NDM, and will participate in wider Research Unit activities with other post-docs, theme leads and the Unit Director, Professor Peter Simmonds.

     The appointee may provide laboratory supervision for one or more PhD students enrolled in the programme of Genomics to Enhance Microbiological Screening (GEMS).

     As a Post-doc research fellow, you will hold a relevant PhD/DPhil in a virology, microbiology or molecular biology subject area, or a related computational field (eg biostatistics, bioinformatics) combined with laboratory experience.

     Excellent communication skills, including the ability to write for publication, present research proposals and results, and represent the research group at Research Unit meetings is essential, as well as bioinformatics skills, experience in molecular methods and the ability to manage your own academic research and associated activities.

     Working experience of sample handling at containment level 2 or 3 and a willingness to work irregular hours and travel (with appropriate prior notice) is desirable.

     The post is full-time and fixed term for 2 years, potentially extendable to 31/03/2027.Applications for this vacancy are to be made online.
